Gillian Densmore

second computer issue

Anyone have some ideas what'd cause a Del to constantly only say it's at 80% ram use with only firefox open.I ask because recently the damn thing when I run firefox slows to a crawl, ctr-shift-esc says it has 80% of the ram used, and 10% of the CPU used.

When I tride googling nothing stood out.

I just need the damn thing to stay together long enough to be able to backup.

You didn't say how much RAM you have, but if its 1GB or less, then
what you report would be unremarkable.

Check to see how much RAM your OS thinks you have. If you are running
Windows, you find this info from the hardware widget under control
panel, or the properties entry on the context menu of "Computer",

If the machine reports less RAM than is physically installed, then
possibly some of the memory modules have moved and need reseating
(this can happen when you expose the computer to a shock when moving
it, or even over time due to thermal stresses). If so, then it's a
quite simple fix to open you computer up and reseat the memory by
pulling the modules out and replacing them - just do so carefully,
don't try to force things as that's when you break them.

Greetings Russ, thanks for the quick response!

It's a 9y Del Inspiron, I had ordered with 8 gigs I wouldn't be surprised if the root of the problems are it having feet issues.

Hi Gillian,

I have been having similar problems with all my browsers: Chrome, Opera, and possibly Fire Fox. What I see is that using multiple tabs eats up huge amounts of memory. Chrome, for example often starts two processes for each tab, each using a good sized block of memory, whether the tabs are doing anything or not. Sometimes Chrome will retain that that block, which can be quite large while it is being used, event though you close the tab. On a memory-short set up this can bring everything to a crawl. My solution with Chrome on this system is to not use tabs at all and to routinely make sure Chrome processes that should have shut down do in fact shut down. This is on an early Dell with a good enough processor but only 2 GB of memory and Win 7.

It’s a sad man who takes computer advice from the likes of me, but …. I did get into a similar tangle with my dying dell a few years ago, and I discovered that by using the resource manager in the resource tab of the task manager, I could identify programs that were grabbing resources and murder them. There were some strange culprits, you-tube and skype, for instance.

Whats your firefox version, and what OS do you run ? Then plugins and
add-ons may be your culprit

FF is notorious for "memory leaks" and some versions are particularly
memory hogs.

Try and use the FF "ESR" versions instead of the latest version they
keep upgrading you to.

Switch to "Seamonkey" which doesn't seem to have these memory issues.

Hmm, I'll take a look. I used it once in the past for debuging a weby-web project.

In your experience, for someone like me that likes to have a few windows open for different aspects of my workflow-

One for ambient sounds and or music, one for pieces of concept art for work, and third for research as needed

And of course googledocs for writing

What browser can do that if it's not FF?
