keyboards and mice

Gillian Densmore
I use a logitech G110. I like it for the 'G'- keys, and that it can record macros.
Problem is the craftsmanship on it is poor. Mine is made with with average parts. I doubt I need to say much more on that.
This has may have placed me in the market to replace it.
My mouse is probably next, along with the graphics card and hard drive.
(The new parts have to be able to wether the type of use typical to gamers): my questions are
-------------------------------
I love games, and that may be the reason my keyboard and mouse don't work well:

What keyboards have people used that are built with that in mind?

I'm considering a Ibm model M keyboard ibm model M keyboard (sold by unicomp)

What do other people think?

MMMMMMMMM!  Record Macros.

Word (for windows) has progressively undermined its macro-making abilities.  I used to have a huge store of macros for editing and commenting on manuscripts.  I miss them terribly.  Can you say more about macro-making for idiots.

There is one particular key combination a number of FRIAMites have mastered... it involves simultaneously striking a number of keys at the same time in the precise pattern of the side of your fist.  There are two macros, one for lefties, one for righties...

These macros delete an entire thread of my and Glen's long and tedious discussions laced (or larded) with speculation, anecdote, and argumentative style.   "Au Contraire mon Petite Cuchon!"

I don't know the precise combination but a little experimentation may find it for you... form your fist into a ball and slam it firmly down on the keyboard while uttering "damn it!  Not again!"

My friend has one of those gamer keyboard-and-mouse pairs that attempt to look sleek and dangerous and that have black plastic with colourfully glowing sections and names like 'the Viper' or something (actually, I think the mouse was a Rat). The keyboard is very clicky but apparently very nice to use once you get used to that. He showed me the macro keys, I guess they can be set to alter common computer functions or insert chunks of text and so on. I suppose that could be very useful once you realise a need for it. Myself, I am content with the cheap laptop keyboard and a cheap optical USB Logitech.
But Eric Raymond has some things to say about* keyboards including the Model M: http://esr.ibiblio.org/?p=4975
Also there was a guide to mice originating on 4chan, and when I tried to find it again I found there was quite a few: https://www.google.com/search?q=4chan+mouse+guide.

Good luck.
-Arlo

*It was at this point in typing this email that my mouse decided to be ironic and ignore left clicks. Thankfully I still had the trackpad. And then it went away after about five minutes.

Edit: siiiign...reminded me of a reference I could not find a good link to.

I use a Microsoft 4000 with the base that slopes it way from me to prevent bending my wrists.  These are adequate for gaming and have some macro capability.

The Tech Report <http://techreport.com> system guide recommends the Topre Type Heaven for those who type a lot.  They also suggest the Rosewill RK-9000 series keyboards with Cherry MX brown switches for a combination of typing and gaming.  Metadot's Das Keyboard Professional uses the same switches and has some macro capability.  For pure gaming, they recommend the Corsair Vengeance K70 and K95.
