Hi all, just a quick question. Is there cafe wifi for civilians

The Coffee House has free wifi - it's in the Smith's shopping center: <https://www.thecoffeebooth.com/> UNM-LA also has free wifi: <http://www.la.unm.edu/Wireless/> There is a cafe there too: <http://www.la.unm.edu/business/ food_services.html> -Jane On Feb 23, 2009, at 3:19 PM, Giles Bowkett wrote: > Hi all, just a quick question. There *was* free wifi at the video store on Conoco hill and they had coffee too a year ago... don't know about now. The Quark Bar keeps promising to put in WiFi for me so I can drink beer (rather than coffee) in the afternoon while pretending to work. - Steve > > -Jane > > > > On Feb 23, 2009, at 3:19 PM, Giles Bowkett wrote: > >> Hi all, just a quick question. There used to be free WIFI in the lobby of the Hilltop House, or whatever they call it now. Haven't been there in a while, though, so I don't know if it's still there.

Another unexpected option is at Totavi where they seem to have open WiFi and damn good Breakfast Burritos. I last enjoyed their services when LA was snowed in and the whole Espanola Valley (including the solar-powered TewaCom) was out of power. You can also pull off the road 100 yards east of Otowi bridge and catch the coattails of my own WiFi ("1Plow" and "linksys") and if you smell coffee you can come to my door and see if I have a pot on the woodstove... I usually do when I'm here! - Steve ============================================================ FRIAM Applied Complexity Group listserv Meets Fridays 9a-11:30 at cafe at St. John's College lectures, archives, unsubscribe, maps at http://www.friam.org |
Damn!
That offer almost makes me wish I still drove up that direction every now & then. I said, 'almost'. BTW, the Furor of the Day, for those of you who don't follow the shenanigans up at LANL, is that LANS , the Los Alamos M&O contractor, has banned pdf email attachments. Any and all pdf attachments are being deep-sixed by the corporate email server. The now famous (and world renowned) corporate contractor of LANL is, however, becoming a bit desparate, because they are starting to run out of ways to keep people from getting their work done. I hear suggestions are being greatfully accepted in this regard. --Doug On Mon, Feb 23, 2009 at 5:23 PM, Steve Smith <[hidden email]> wrote:

Normally such things sit in quarantine until they get scanner signatures (AFAICT so that they can blame the vendor that sells the signatures if anything bad is perceived to have happened). They also blocked direct access to PDFs from the web via the proxy server. ============================================================ FRIAM Applied Complexity Group listserv Meets Fridays 9a-11:30 at cafe at St. John's College lectures, archives, unsubscribe, maps at http://www.friam.org |

Maybe not a cafe, but they do sell coffee, and have free Wi-Fi: McDonalds.
(almost all McDonalds have free Wi-Fi) ~~James On Mon, Feb 23, 2009 at 5:19 PM, Giles Bowkett <[hidden email]> wrote: > Hi all, just a quick question. Once we got everyone converted to 9.0, we allowed those attachments. I know it was a real problem because we spearphished a customer with the Adobe vulnerability as part of a red-team engagement. To the best of my knowledge, there hasn't been a new vulnerability in pdf and our computer security folks (with whom I work regularly) have not said anything about a problem. Either LANL is about six months behind on security updates or they know something we don't know. -- Ray Parks [hidden email] Consilient Heuristician Voice:505-844-4024 ATA Department Mobile:505-238-9359 http://www.sandia.gov/scada Fax:505-844-9641 http://www.sandia.gov/idart Pager:800-690-5288 ============================================================ FRIAM Applied Complexity Group listserv Meets Fridays 9a-11:30 at cafe at St. John's College lectures, archives, unsubscribe, maps at http://www.friam.org |

It's also 9.0 vulnerability and Adobe doesn't expect to have a fix until March 11 and earlier versions after that. Further they say that they don't know if non-Adobe PDF readers are immune or not. This says to me that they don't really know any details and are just relying on the "cyber community" and the vendors to sort things out. ============================================================ FRIAM Applied Complexity Group listserv Meets Fridays 9a-11:30 at cafe at St. John's College lectures, archives, unsubscribe, maps at http://www.friam.org |
The "cyber community" already has started to sort it out:

I stand corrected - there is a new 0day for pdf - http://blog.metasploit.com/2009/02/best-defense-is-information.html The patch does not come out until 11 March 2009. This vulnerability affects both versions 8 and 9 of Adobe Reader and Acrobat on all platforms (although exploits in the wild are only for Windows versions). The virus companies are aware and, if you have antivirus, you should update the virus signatures to ensure you won't be affected. Since the vulnerability depends upon javascript being enabled in pdf files, there is a registry hack for Windows which can be applied manually, using reg.exe, or through group policy. The registry hack will cause reader to put up a dialogue and users could undo the fix. If other viewers allow and interpret javascript in pdf files, then they could be vulnerable, but not to the same exploit - it would have to be modified to work with other viewers. -- Ray Parks [hidden email] Consilient Heuristician Voice:505-844-4024 ATA Department Mobile:505-238-9359 http://www.sandia.gov/scada Fax:505-844-9641 http://www.sandia.gov/idart Pager:800-690-5288 ============================================================ FRIAM Applied Complexity Group listserv Meets Fridays 9a-11:30 at cafe at St. John's College lectures, archives, unsubscribe, maps at http://www.friam.org |
