Renting a 4x4 in Kyrgyzstan

Cross
Planning a trip to Bishkek and then heading out to Issyk-Kul and Song-Kul for some proper mountain exploring. I know the roads get rough once you leave the capital, so I need something with decent clearance. Anyone sorted a rental there before?

Booking ahead through an aggregator is the way to go, especially in Bishkek where the best 4x4s get snapped up fast during summer. You want something like a Prado or a Delica with proper off-road tires, and check that the spare wheel is actually mounted and not just a photo prop. To find a reliable car for hire in Kyrgyzstan, you can browse the listings here https://getrentacar.com/en-US/kyrgyzstan .

Carry cash in som for fuel stops in the villages, card machines barely work outside Bishkek and the yurt camp owners won't take Visa when you need jerry cans topped up.
