Cleaning out my email, due to a recent 6-week long trip, I think I'm seeing a very odd phenomenon: Linked-in endorsements are increasing considerably!
I'm wondering if this is a nifty power-law example where someone gets an endorsement, that reminds them to either endorse back and/or to endorse friends that they've been meaning to endorse.
Anyone else seeing this? -- Owen

Yes, I'm seeing the same thing, but I don't know why nor can I assess its significance. So somebody endorses me as a "Freelance writer." So what, especially if they are friends and not clients?

Yeah. At first LI didn't do it well - the first few I got left me with no option to return the favor. However, they eventually rigged it up that when you log in to LI (not just go to a forum discussion), you get presented with a mini-app with four people
you should know and what they've said they do. I usually click a few, if I know for sure that the person has expertise in the area. I think they're using the information put in by the LI user - frequently the topic areas are really broad (like "Security").

Yes, seeing it, but I think it's a Linked-In artifact, nothing real.

I was endorsed for 'teaching' and 'research'. It makes one wonder to what extent the people responsible for hiring actually use LinkedIn to search for / verify candidates - it seems there are better (albeit specialized) sites, like Behance for artists, et cetera).

This may be the answer to the endorsement up-tick. I got a direct email asking for an endorsement, see below. The question is: was this generated by LI? .. or by the person themselves.

I got a call from The Google a few weeks ago, in which they expressed a desire to hire me. The guy was a Google headhunter, and he found out about me & my HPC background by searching LinkdIn.
So, yes: companies look at LinkedIn.

A bubbly, breathless young thing recruiting for Google called me almost two years ago based on my LinkedIn profile. However, it was pretty clear that she (or her search software) had not bothered to read that profile. I know how Google's security folks work
and so I asked whether they had decided to form a red team - she had no idea what I was talking about. After a couple of call-backs she became discouraged and quit bothering me.
