Of course Tom.  We need both.  But they are not the same and require different problem-solving processes.

Re: Interdisciplinary work

David Eric Smith
In reply to this post by Merle Lefkoff-2
Thank you for this, Merle,

I always tried to make that the term of use, and mostly failed.

Transdicsciplinary is a person with a foot in each of two boats.  Not the most comfortable place to stand, but different.

Interdisciplinary is the person standing between the two boats without a foot in either.

Eric

Different problem-solving processes.  Ummmmm.  Depends on your perspective and definition, I suppose.  I usually start with a General Systems Theory perspective.  With that, "Inter" and "Intra" are scalable versions of similar models, which could use similar problem-solving processes.

Re: Interdisciplinary work

Prof David West
In reply to this post by Merle Lefkoff-2
How to trans/inter relate to the concept of "modern polymath" that is used in business and design literature. An extension of the "T-shaped individual" ==> "pi shaped individual" ==> "broken comb individual."  The idea is to combine breadth of knowledge with depth in one discipline. T=one area of depth; pi=two, broken comb= integrated and deep breadth with multiple depths to varying degrees. Modern polymath=integrated web of knowledge.

I have telling software developers for 20 years or so that they must become modern polymaths.

Of course Tom.  We need both.  But they are not the same and require different problem-solving processes.
