Android phones

Gary Schiltz-4
Looking for advice on escaping the gravitational well that is the Apple iOS ecosystem before I reach the event horizon. Hope it isn't too late already. The hard part seems to be choosing a device. With so many years of having barely any choice (other than how much money to shovel into the furnace), I'm now drowning in choices. HELP! :-)

The hacker/tinkerer part of me wants something that I can install a custom OS on, i.e. LineageOS (formerly CyanogenMod). Any thoughts from that crowd? The "just want something that works" part of me is looking for something that us likely to keep working as apps are updated, and have "officially supported" OS updates. I'd appreciate thoughts from anyone in that camp as well.

Re: Android phones

I've been pretty happy with my Google Pixel 2, though Renee' still has her 1. Mine is unlocked and I explored different OSes when I first got my Pixel 1. But I think I've satisfied my tinkering on my service phone for awhile.  I was tinkering on my ZTE Open.  But now I'm thinking of getting a Fair phone: https://www.fairphone.com/en/

My experience is mixed:
Nexus 4
Google being them dropped it with a buggy OS 7.x  that to this day is known to sometimes work and sometimes not install right
LineageOS 15 has a huge bug
On the other hand  it does have a bunch of ROMs to pick from some neet apps etc.

Re: Android phones

A Google Pixel (I have the 3 XL) will give you the most "untainted by bloatware" version of Android - plus regular updates. Can't speak to rooting it. I continue to be impressed by the camera - it's flat out amazing.

But no removable memory (automagically uploads to your google account online) and there are times I wish it was better as an actual phone - mostly what I want to call someone.

Re: Android phones

Roger Critchlow-2
My phone for the past few years has been the Moto X4, which is a good Android One phone that's nearing end of life.

My daughter complained at first about Motorola bloatware, but apparently that's cleared up.  I never notiiced it.

It's listing for $149-199 this week according to google, works fine on Google Fi.

Google will be announcing a new pair of Pixel phones at I/O next month

Re: Android phones

Gillian Densmore
I never got the bloatware grumble. Then my first android was a Samsung Galaxy.    My issue(S)  is that the when my phone is used any: battery life goes to crap, runs pretty hot, then slows down, then crashes.
It's also pretty weird it's vidgety to get working with Tmobiles voice system. Though that one is a Tmobile thing to some degree. Their voice mail service crap
GPS is hit and mis. Still has Dougs famous or even infamous wtf bugS of: Bluetooth will cause Google Maps to not work well. WiFi and bluetooth may or may not play well when on at the same time

Android 9 cut and or changed features to rely way to much on buttons being pushed just right. From what I've read need to swipe down (or up) just right to get to settings android 8 has right their.
And someone decided I don't need to see when updates and downloads are working (or not)

Re: Android phones

Russell Standish-2
I've gone low end, around the USD 100 mark, since mobile phones are
just a tool, not the focal centre of you life like it is for some folk
(my laptop is more that thing). Being cheap means I don't worry too
much if I lose it, or it meets an untimely end in say a swimming pool.

In the last 8.5 years since I moved from Symbian to Android I've had
one LG, two Samsungs and am now on a Xiaomi Redmi 5. The LG died with
a faulty earphone jack (couldn't hear the person on the other end
regardless of whether the earphone is being used), the two Samsungs
died with charger circuit issues, but otherwise were fantastic phones
for the approx 2 years they survived. The Redmi, which I've now had
for 6 months has great specs, but the build quality is not so
great. The screen is covered in cracks, and the buttons are starting
to get difficult to press. Oh, well, you gets what you pay for, I suppose.

By contrast, my wife used her iPhone 4s for about 6 years, with only
one cracked screen needing to be replaced. Apple do have good build
quality.

Don't know if this helps.
