ABQ FRIAM Chapter

Way, way cool!

In terms of activities, we've had luck with periodic chats at SFI, and
we just participated in a 4-day workshop at SFI organized by a FRIAMer
-- Merle Lefkoff.  It brought together a very diverse group working on
identity formation within populations, and what effect this has on
negotiation.

Another activity we have is a WedTech meeting for folks to discuss
specific technical topics.  Lately its been as simple as several of us
having lunch at a local cafe, but we often have met at the Redfish
office where we could have more formal talks.

One "soft goal" of the wedtech meetings was to look into modern
modeling techniques beyond the traditional netlogo/repast/swarm
approach.  This includes GIS, 3D, math/stats packages, and suites of
components that can be easily reused.  Recently we've been looking into
data mining and textual/document clustering.  The idea is to build up
our expertise in new (at least to us!) areas so that we can tackle a
wider range of interesting problems.

Great email, Cathy.  I'm sending this text only version to FRIAM again,
yours seems to have gotten all its contents digested away.  I removed the
directions: IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED IN THE VOICES OF IRAQ VIDEO THIS SUNDAY,
PLEASE LET ME KNOW AND I'LL SEND YOU DIRECTIONS:
[mailto:[hidden email]] or call 821-3407

As far as a syllabus, I think I have both my UNM one and Peter Shive's.  I
tried to teach the course differently than he, with much more emphasis on
complexity.  With undergrads it ended up being too vague and hand waving.
His course was focussed on Chaos and the Math was more accessible.  I'll dig
them up.

If we do end up doing the class, I'd like to put together a support group to
help me work out the best approach, to research and present various pieces
(e.g. Jonathan Wolfe on Fractals), and give me feedback.  I want to grow as
a teacher, and give others a chance to present as well.

-Mike Oliker
PS: I you want, in any event, to be added to the Chaos Club email list, let
me know.

Good Morning,
The first ABQ FRIAM Chapter meeting was a success -- Mike Oliker, Mike
Kruchoski and I met.  Below is a summary of the meeting, provided by Mike
Oilker.  In addition to Mike's summary, the group discussed the following
two book titles:

The Life of the Cosmos, Lee Smolin
Signs of Life, Richard Sole & Brian Goodwin

The group also discussed the ongoing work at the Lodestar.  Here are the
links of interest:
Lodestar Astronomy Center:  http://www.lodestar.unm.edu/
Domefest 2005:  http://www.domefest.com

The group discussed a Complexity 101+ course.   Please let me know if you
would be interested in attending such a course.  Mike O. has experience in
presenting such a class.  Mike are you able to provide a course syllabus?
The plan for the class is to find a conference room at either Sandia, UNM or
ATK.  The class would be held on a weekday, sometime around  5:00.

Also, please see Mike's Movie invitation to view the movie titled " VOICES
OF IRAQ."  The information is included below.

Happy Monday!

IDEAS
As we put this together, some ideas we had were:
(1) Merge our Friam spin off into Chaos Club
(2) We see if we can get a conference room from Sandia or ATK.
(3) We can generate a course in Chaos and Complexity from the courses that
Peter taught and the one I taught, plus anything else.
(4) We can have guest speakers from UNM, SFI, Friam, the Labs, other
sources.
(5) We could do joint stuff with other groups from Sandia or elsewhere, e.g.
New Mexicans for Science and Reason, the Balloon Museum, the Science Museums
(6) Let's not go too crazy -- leave space for just hanging out and sharing
ideas

MOVIE GROUP
SUNDAY 13 FEBRUARY 2005 AT 6 PM
WATCHING "VOICES OF IRAQ"

One of the curious things about the run up to the War in Iraq is how
invisible the Iraqis were in that conversation, pro or con.  The next video
we'll be watching in the Movie Group is a opportunity to get to know
something of who the Iraqis are, and that will be our focus.  We all have
opinions about the war and US policy; this movie isn't about that (though
both opinions get expressed in it).  This is a chance to see the world
through Iraqi eyes.  I've shown it to my family (with both points of view
strongly represented) and they found it interesting, new, and unbiased.  And
it's fun, and the music is great.

So, come, bring your friends and let's hear the Voices of Iraq.

Voices of Iraq (2004)
The producers of this groundbreaking documentary distributed 150 digital
video cameras across Iraq to enable everyday people -- mothers, children,
teachers, sheiks, even insurgents -- to voice their perspectives on issues
such as war, terror and the democratic reform. The result is a unique
tableau documenting Iraqis' lives and their hopes as they struggle with
years of turmoil and strive to build a civil society. Note: Contains graphic

Hi all,

I missed the inaugural ABQ meeting, but I will try to make the next one. (I somehow missed what was decided on as the location; can someone provide coordinates again?) I am potentially very interested in the proposed complexity class as well.

I too attended the digital filmmaking conference at UNM, and found it interesting. (Thanks for posting the announcement on this list; I would have totally missed it otherwise.) As someone else said, the crowd was quite big--350 or so registered participants. It was a bit short on specifics as to how precisely how NM technology will contribute to filmmaking, but I think that's OK at this stage. There seemed a strong commitment to keeping the communication going, and providing some mutual education to technical types and filmmakers on the needs and capabilities of each group. We will see.

Regards,
Chris

Hi Chris,

We (Mike Oliker, Mike Kruchoski and I) are working on the details of
setting up the class.  So far, it seems ATK Mission Research Corp., is
able and willing to provide a conference room.  Mike O. is working on
the syllabus.  Do you have any particular topics you would like to see
on the syllabus?  We are also looking for others to present to the
class; do you have any subject matter you would like to present?

To all on the list, please feel free to provide some input for the
class.

Cathy
