Well, then I misunderstood what you meant by SteelMan.  I thought, "to SteelMan a proposition (is not to argue for it but) to put it in its best form in preparation for argument.

Aha! But the contrarian is simply the other face opposite to steelmanner. They are 2 sides of the same coin. If you can't argue against positions you agree with, you can't argue for positions you disagree with.
