Fran Allen was a joy to know and to work with. She visited our compiler group at Berkeley in the mid-80’s, and helped several members of the group get their start after graduation. I continued to interact with her for a number of years when we’d cross paths at meetings. My advisor and fellow graduate students have been sharing our reminiscences since the news of her death. Her ability to welcome, encourage, and help those who were following in her footsteps was an example for all of us.
