Hmm.  A possible example are mentor/student relationships where the
mentor apparently "cares enough" to torture/exploit/haze the talented
student, but lets the ordinary student coast through without scrutiny --
a psychological struggle for dominance that is a sort of destabilizing
feedback loop...
