** reminder today ** Wedtech talk: 11:30a Artist Maria Michails - Human Behavior and Resource Consumption

Stephen Guerin
please join us today for a wedtech talk!

speaker: Maria Michails
title: Artistic Interpretation Relating Human Behavior and Resource
Consumption

december 9. 1130a-1230p.
Santa Fe Complex, Commons, 632 Agua Fria Street

abstract: (but more of an Artist Statement)
What would it take for there to be a change in human behavior with
regard to resource consumption?  Despite the proliferation of
research, discussion and the mainstream attention to climate change,
water shortage and alternative energy, etc., the word 'conservation'
seems to elude us when trying to define sustainability.  In thinking
about this problem, my projects attempt to raise questions about
personal responsibility and place the human body as mediator between
ecology and technology.

bio:
Maria Michails is a multi-disciplinary artist whose art practice
bridges the sciences, engineering and architecture.  Her human-powered
mechanisms are the nucleus of interactive installations that parallel
human expenditure with human consumption to address broader ecological
and social issues specific to place.  She's a recipient of numerous
creative and research grants and her work has been exhibited in North
America and Europe.  Recent residency fellowships include Vermont
Studio Center, Santa Fe Art Institute, Kimmel Harding Nelson Center
for the Arts, and Sculpture Space in Utica, NY.  Ms. Michails has
taught foundation studies in art at Arizona State University and the
University of Manitoba, Winnipeg.  She earned an MFA from Arizona
State University (2008), and a BFA from Concordia University in
Montreal (1996).
