Hi everybody,
One of the postdocs at the institute was asking me what is the state of the art in ``swarm intelligence'': how much meaningful theory has been built around it, what applications have been important, and generally what are the metrics for its usefulness or identity as a field. I think several FRIAMers have kept up to date on this, yes? If you could recommend either a current and good-quality technical review, or an appropriate person to ask, I would be grateful and forward it along. Many thanks, Eric Smith |

The latest conference on the subject was held in April of last year <http://www.computelligence.org/sis/index.html>. Checking my library, I found the names John Arquilla (currently at the Center on Terrorism and Irregular Warfare at the Naval Postgraduate School) and David Ronfeldt (International Studies Group, Rand Corporation) is common to most of my material on swarm intelligence. The book _Swarm_Intelligence_ was written by James Kennedy (Department of Labor, but his web-site is at <http://www.particleswarm.net/JK>) and Russel G. Eberhart (Purdue, <http://www.engr.iupui.edu/~eberhart/>) with Yuhui Shi (Purdue and EDS, <http://www.engr.iupui.edu/~shi/>). There is a company called Icosystem <http://www.icosystem.com/> out of Cambridge that was founded by Eric Bonabeau who may be known to those who attend meetings at SFI. I know he came to the April 10-11, 2003, BizNet meeting on terrorism. Icosystem applies methodologies derived from agent-based modeling, swarm intelligence, evolutionary computation, and distributed computing to business questions (ant model comes to mind). I hope this helps. -- Ray Parks [hidden email] IDART Project Lead Voice:505-844-4024 IORTA Department Fax:505-844-9641 http://www.sandia.gov/idart Pager:800-690-5288 |
Good suggestions, Ray.
Also, Marco Dorigo's site has good applied papers and review papers: http://iridia.ulb.ac.be/~mdorigo/ACO/ACO.html And, in a small way, we've been exploring whether or not there's a self-organizing engine process going on in ant-foraging algorithms. As a start we're looking for appropriate measures of work. We're not quite there yet, but here's a recent paper that shows our direction: Measures of Work in Artificial Life: http://www.redfish.com/research/MeasuresOfWorkInALife_v1_1.pdf Also, Alberto Donati just joined the FRIAM list. He was our resident expert at BiosGroup. Perhaps he has some favorite links... -Steve ____________________________________________________ http://www.redfish.com [hidden email] 624 Agua Fria Street office: (505)995-0206 Santa Fe, NM 87501 mobile: (505)577-5828 > -----Original Message----- > From: rcparks [mailto:[hidden email]] > Sent: Tuesday, February 17, 2004 11:06 AM > To: The Friday Morning Applied Complexity Coffee Group > Subject: Re: [FRIAM] ping about swarm intelligence > > > Eric Smith wrote: > ...
