We've been glossing over the 'mere bookkeeping' aspects of thermodynamics in our Wednesday study session, hurrying on to the more interesting bits.

Here's an article, open access, from PNAS, which suggests that bookkeeping, in the dreary, economic, dusty journals with smudged ink sense, may be an inducement for reciprocity in societies.
