introduction & Workshop videos

Gabriel Istrate
Dear all,

I've been lurking on FRIAM for slightly more than two years now (for
me FRIAM brings home a little piece of Santa Fe, though I can't quite
cope with the mail volume :)).

I am Gabriel Istrate, a former LANL employee, at some point sitting in
the office right next to Doug Roberts  (hi Doug !). Calling in from
one of the more exotic locations on the list, Timişoara , Romania

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timişoara

(incidentally the birthplace of Johnny Weissmuller).

A theoretical computer scientist by training (this link

http://www.amazon.com/Gabriel-Istrate/e/B002CB3UYI/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_2

might give you a better insight into my core interests), I am, of
course, into modeling social dynamics as well (though more
evolutionary game theory, rather than multiagent simulation) and, more
generally, into complex systems and the "Santa Fe style" of science.

Anyway, I just wanted to point out to a workshop on "Coping with
Crises in Complex Socio-Economic Systems" that took place a few days
ago on this side of the pond, at ETH Zurich; I did participate to a
related workshop at the same location last year. Videolectures for
both of them are available online at

http://videolectures.net/ccss09_zurich/
http://videolectures.net/cvss08_zurich/

There's plenty of stuff in there you might be interested in. Among
other things, I was pleased to "meet" again (sadly only virtually)
Stephen Eubank (I'm pretty sure most of you know him).

Best,
Gabi

Hi, Gabi!

Good to hear from you again.  Nice to know that you're staying in touch.

For the rest of you, Gabi was part of the same LANL group that I worked in for about 15 years.  It was the group formerly known as "Basic and Applied Simulation Science", but it disintegrated during the turmoil of 2004 - 2005.  In fact we have at least one other refugee from that group who hangs out on this list.  I won't name names...
