iPhone 3/4 in Europe

Owen Densmore
Administrator
A question for folks traveling/living in Europe and using a recent iPhone (3 or 4).

Do either versions have "broadband" cellular capability in Europe?  I.e. can use the (non-wifi) high speed 3G/4G cellular networks?  For extra credit: have you used this in both Europe and the US?

I ask because there are still some incompatibilities between US and Europe in terms of frequency and use of the various GSM bands.

Some of my colleagues have an iPhone 3 or 4 here in Germany. Broadband (UMTS
and HSDPA) is available with the usual flatrates (about 50-60 ?) at the
major mobile carriers (Vodafone, Telekom/T-Mobile, Telefonica/O2). It is
fast enough for normal internet access, but not fast enough for FaceTime,
which will require WiFi access.

Wikipedia says there might be a problem with UMTS bands: "European tri-band
phones typically cover the 900, 1900 and 2100 MHz bands giving good coverage
in Europe and allowing very limited use in North America, while North
American tri-band phones utilize 850, 1900 and 2100 MHz for widespread North
& South American service and good coverage for worldwide use thanks to the
popularity of the 2100 MHz spectrum."
