OK, I'm getting an iPad .. and pre-order starts today. The tough
question is which of them to get? - 3G/WiFi: I'm certain I'll get a WiFi only version. As innovative as the iPad 3G plans are (monthly, no contract required, instant on, two data levels), Santa Fe doesn't have good coverage, especially with ATT. - 16,32,64 GB: This is tough, I don't know how I'll use the critter. My iPhone is very low end -- original 2G/8GB. With care, no problems, and iTunes helps a lot to simplify things. But with the iPad, I suspect I'll want to download most of my music, and have several movies on it. I'm leaning towards 32, even though its an extra $100. Any one else considering pre-order? And if so, which version? -- Owen ============================================================ FRIAM Applied Complexity Group listserv Meets Fridays 9a-11:30 at cafe at St. John's College lectures, archives, unsubscribe, maps at http://www.friam.org |

From one Fanboi to another, I'm not planning to buy one. It just didn't live up to my expectations. I had been holding out, hoping it would make a fair replacement for my wife's 12" G4... but it just doesn't. I may have to break down and buy an aftermarket touch notepad built up from a MacBook. But they are pricey. That said, if I *was* buying one, I'd say skip the 3G and take the extra memory. My 16G iPhone never quite fills up but that is because I know the high water mark and avoid it... I'm sure if I had 32 I'd hover around 30 instead of 15/16. Have fun with your new toy... when are they likely to ship? - Steve > OK, I'm getting an iPad .. and pre-order starts today. Their preorder has two flavors: reserve on at the closest store .. then for sure you'll be able to get it on saturday. Otherwise free shipping as above. Is your iphone a 3g version? If so, does that help? .. i.e. do you get really good coverage and speed? -- Owen ============================================================ FRIAM Applied Complexity Group listserv Meets Fridays 9a-11:30 at cafe at St. John's College lectures, archives, unsubscribe, maps at http://www.friam.org |
Owen,
I feel the need to wipe the saliva off from the inside of my monitor, again. --Doug

I live out of coverage and use Edge only to get my Visual Voicemail when I *am* in range and a little with Google Maps, etc while in big cities (including SFe and ABQ). I'm ready to try a temporary T-Mobile account, unlocking using the same technique you reported a while back. I'll keep both T and ATT long enough to be sure T is an upgrade ( a month or two?). I have a hint that T-mobile has increased their data service in my home region (Otowi Bridge between Pojoaque and Los Alamos) because ATT got mad that I was getting/using too much off-network services (had to be my voicemail download in the LA-Pojoaque corridor cuz I don't use anything else really). What will probably be the real clincher is if T-mobile provides better *voice* service. I have about 6 dropout zones between my house and ABQ... my house itself is a deadzone, Jacona, SFe hill, sometimes mid-599, La Bajada, Santo Domingo dip (sometimes), San Felipe (almost always). It mostly feels like fumbled handoffs but in some cases (Jacona, Otowi) it is just a plain big fat hole in the map. What do I want from living in Rural NM after all? Apple's plans to "deliver" nationwide on a given date is another reason I'm a Fanboi myself. Can you imagine anyone else (except maybe Google) being able to schedule something like that and have a 99% chance of actually delivering?! I'm sure there will be a handful of customers who won't get their iPad until Monday or Tuesday, but I'm sure that UPS/FedEx/USPS/??? will be quite busy that day, not to mention the Apple Stores. How do you tell the difference between Saliva on the inside of the screen and Spittle (aka Froth) on the outside? Or beer spewed from one's nostrils when the wit is too sublime to respond any other way? - Steve Owen, ============================================================ FRIAM Applied Complexity Group listserv Meets Fridays 9a-11:30 at cafe at St. John's College lectures, archives, unsubscribe, maps at http://www.friam.org |
Frequency.
There is far too much of the former, and far too little of the latter. --Doug

Or, to put it another way: my monitor doesn't smell beery enough most of the time.
