iGoogle

iGoogle, a a customizable homepage, http://goo.gl/xeGSr is being retired http://goo.gl/SCXfr next Nov.

Are any of us using a "front/home page" site where you can add widgets to list the weather in several places, has a news scroll, currency converter, calendar/mail/groups outline, and so on?

I'm currently using MyYahoo but its starting to be flaky and I'd like to kill my Yahoo account anyway.  So I remembered iGoogle but Its (soon to be) Dead Jim.

Maybe G+ has some stunt that can make a front page?  I wouldn't mind getting a bit more "social".

Is surprising to me that Google doesn't want to keep it going.  I definitely click through on the Yahoo news scroll and other links on MyYahoo.

Sigh, yet another dead google service.

Re: [sfx: Discuss] iGoogle

While I can definitely commiserate with Google ending services (Google Pack, for one, and SideWiki for another), I can see why they would want to cut back on iGoogle in their age of 'streamlining'. I used it for a while, but as a homepage it became undesirable because of a slower load time, and I was having difficulties keeping the widgets organized. Since many were third-party, sometimes they would break or disappear.
So what is an alternative? Well, until I hear about a third-party solution, something I was intrigued by was this guy, who put a page on his website with what he needs. The advantage of this is he can have public and private content (latter accessed by login; try clicking on 'edit this page'), accessible from anywhere, with local content and content sourced from or linked to anywhere on the Internet. So about the same advantage as iGoogle/MyYahoo, but more personalized (on the other hand, more work to set up).
