Here is the web page for the community wireless group I was discussing.

As long as you can see one of their access points (even if it is 8-10 miles
away),
you should be able to join the network.

My contact into the group is Bob Knight, 466-4548.  Feel free to mention my
name.

As an aside, some of the charts they show on network activity would probably
be interesting from a power law or punctuated equilibrium standpoint.
