I suppose that Venture Capital managers and Hollywood producers are like every other profession - they number a few good and successful members and a huge number of marginally competent among their groups. The marginally competent are the sheep who only jump on something if someone else has already supported the idea. The sheep in both groups are constitutionally unable to recognize a new idea that is likely to succeed. Actually, I think the music, television, and publishing industries are the same. The majority of what is selected for presentation to the public is either copycat or carefully selected to fit some artificial belief in public tastes (read focus grouped into bland mediocrity). Oh, and I should include current-day corporate radio in this group. What is truly amusing about the article is that it takes the stance that creativity should be expended in shearing the sheep rather than innovation. -- Ray Parks [hidden email] IDART Project Lead Voice:505-844-4024 IORTA Department Fax:505-844-9641 http://www.sandia.gov/idart Pager:800-690-5288 |

Think "Supporting Cast"! .. i.e. lots of folks are needed to nurture the "stars". So not really sheep, more like sheep dogs. Interesting the mentioning that only Jobs spans both worlds. His metaphor is not "hollywood" however, its "design". Close. Owen |

So not really sheep, more like sheep dogs. Actually, what I got out of the article is that one should spend one's creativity on developing "buzz" to excite those who do not have the vision to recognize worthwhile new ideas. Once you have those sheep, i.e. the VC or Producers or .... that don't think for themselves, interested in one's idea, one can milk them for all the money one can get. It seems to me the author is recommending the con-man approach over the create a new idea approach. I suppose, to be charitable, he is saying that however wonderful one's new idea, one should face facts and realize that it will never be recognized by its worth and, instead of relying on that recognition, one should con the money people into doing good for oneself as well as themselves. -- Ray Parks [hidden email] IDART Project Lead Voice:505-844-4024 IORTA Department Fax:505-844-9641 http://www.sandia.gov/idart Pager:800-690-5288 |
