Bob Knight and John McDermon of the La Canada Wireless Association met
with several of us at a SFI meeting setup by Jim Crutchfield. The goal of the meeting was to see how we could have more folks in Santa Fe take part in the LCWA network, or at the least, start our own networks. I'd like to get a list of FRIAM folks interested in the venture. The idea is roughly this: - Get a list of interested folks - Get a fairly good idea of where we live topologically speaking - See how we could link up to each other giving the topo data - Perform a field study of our radio connectability. (This is called "stumbling") - Work out what equipment we'd need to form a WiFi community The goal is to have inexpensive, shared, high bandwidth connectivity by sharing a T1 line (1.5 MBit bidirectional connection). A T1 leases for around $600/month. With 10 folks, that pro-rates to $60/month each, with 20 its $30/month each. Although that's still not "cheap", its very much faster than most current household broadband, and for folks outside service areas, its much better than a modem! Let me know if you are interested. I am also a member of La Canada Wireless Association but couldn't
make the meeting last night because I'm out of town. I think it's great that there's a group interested in putting together a new cloud. Especially if some of them are in the Comcast district:). LCWA has a lot of good experience with what works and doesn't work WRT long haul WiFi links and I'm sure other folks just learning about this can leverage that experience. Curiously, I'm not connected to the LCWA network right now. In Sept I moved from Eldorado to La Posta which is between Camp Stoney & Apache Ridge. I no longer have line of sight distance to any LCWA access points. I'm interested in recruiting someone on lower Apache Ridge Rd or on the east side of Dos Griegos to provide the missing link to the LCWA network. I have at least two neighbors who'd join the network if we could make the link. BTW, I have my own stumbling rig which uses an iPAQ and a yagi antenna. It's a fun little toy since the iPAQ is real small and the yagi's directional reception lets you track down the source of WiFi signals.
