Wildfire prediction and resource planning

Stephen Guerin
Wired article forwarded by David Breeker. The article explains the advantage
of combining wildfire prediction combined with resource plannng. Doesn't
seem to have a modeling component, though...

Wildfire Prediction Heats Up

A new agency in the Pacific Northwest is in the business of forecasting
wildfires. It's one of 11 such units across the nation using current weather
data and past fire patterns to predict which blazes will grow and where to
put the resources.

Wildfire prediction and resource planning

Frank Wimberly
Stephen,

What a coincidence.  I talked to those people (Fitzpatrick and Marsha) about
a half hour before your mail arrived.  As for modeling, they do use logistic
regression to predict lightning strikes but there is nothing like
agent-based modeling that they use that I am aware of.  They gave me a lot
of additional information about their methods much of which can be found via
the page www.or.blm.gov/nwcc

Wildfire prediction and resource planning

Bruce Sawhill
I  published results of a model of lightning strikes on a growing mixed
forest landscape along with Melissa Savage, it is in the Journal of
Theoretical Biology, something like Aug. 2000.  This was built in
Swarm.  We always felt that such a model could be used for resource
planning and the like.

Cheers,

Bruce
