I'm having success with a combination of a SimpleTech 80GB external drive
(fits in a shirt pocket, runs off USB, $130) and Microsoft's SyncToy (one of the few pieces of MS software that does what it's meant to and no more). Strictly speaking this isn't a pure backup solution: my problem is that I work on a couple of machines in the office and a couple at home, and I want to make sure that I've always got the latest version of data, programs etc. to hand. By syncing regularly with all these machines I avoid version problems plus I get a pretty robust distributed backup (also I can cycle to work as I'm not lugging a laptop). Some people seriously use a version control system like SVN. You could
keep a SVN repository of your working directories on the portable harddrive. Robert, I use Sonic RecordNow: www.sonic.com/products/Consumer/RecordNow/ It's pretty much built for this purpose.
Although I have gotten XP to do this, it's a big pain. Microsoft bought a company called Folder Share foldershare.com. It takes
the files on multiple machines and synchs them over the internet. Foldershare creates a webpage with your machines and selected files, and continually scans, so any change in one is immediately propagated to the others if they are on the internet. I've been using it for several months and it is fine. It even deletes files on all machines that are deleted on any one. I''ve been trying to get as much of my stuff onto the net as possible (mail,
calendar, project manager, contacts etc.) but this is the one part that stumps me. I'm usually tinkering around with a couple of GB of data files and my broadbands (home and office) just wouldn't handle that regularly. Until I can get truly fat pipes, looks like I'll be carrying around this external drive.
