Here's an interesting critter: MiFi from Verizon:

I like it because you can skip 3G built into all your devices, just  
using wifi (see ipad email).  And this should work fine for your  
laptop and any other wifi critter you might have .. like apple tv.

And I think in our area (santa fe), verizon has pretty good coverage,  
but not sure about speed/3g.

Interesting device.  On the other hand, I'd prefer tethering to become  
widely available, so that our phones could be the mifi replacement ..  
although without the base station.

BTW, the ipad 3g service pricing is really sweet: $14.99 for 250MB or  
$29.99 for unlimited data .. and no contract.
