My son Tim introduced me to Ubuntu Linux a while back:
http://ubuntulinux.org/ While at the Asilomar conference, we bumped into an old friend who was convincing folks to have their elder friends get off Windows onto Ubuntu in order for them to be less vulnerable to the various elder scams that apparently are rife on Windows. Interesting twist on why to switch off Windows .. onto Linux rather than Mac! Actually, one advantage apparently is that Gnome on Ubuntu is more windows-like so is familiar to windows users. -- Owen Owen Densmore - http://backspaces.net - http://redfish.com - [hidden email] |

The guys from the linux link tech show had a pretty good review of Ubuntu (beware that they get fairly ribald on occasion). Actually they had several shows where they talked about it, but this show in particular has a pretty comprehensive review from the POV of a regular user. I have the KDE version (Kubuntu) loaded on a machine here, and while I don't think it's quite ready for prime time, it is pretty sweet. I imagine by the time Breezy Badger (their next release) comes out it will have been polished up nicely. It is *not* a distro for people who think slackware is the king - it is aimed at ease of install, and ease of use. There is also no root user by default - you are supposed to use sudo instead. All in all, I like it a lot, and I think it will continue to make a huge splash. If you like Mepis, definitely keep an eye on Kubuntu.
