URGENT "URGENT!"! Restaurants in SF.

Nick Thompson

Hi, everybody.  Sorry for this intrusion.

I just got an urgent email from friends saying that they are in Santa Fe for a few days and want recommendations for good local restaurants.  I am a bad person to ask because I hate anything with chili peppers in it.  Could you please help me out by sending local restaurant recommendations?   I don’t spose you have to limit yourselves to New Mexican cuisine, but some of that would obviously be timely.

We find that the restaurant in La Fonda does a good job with New Mexican chow.

Il Piatto, definitely, and if they enjoy people, tell 'em to sit at the bar (full service) and chat with Andrew, who will take good care of them. This is not a spaghetti and pizza place, this is a wonderful northern Italian place, with a good wine list, seafood, daily specials, wonderful atmosphere, and they specialize in working with local growers and providers. Also reasonably priced, for a block north of the plaza.

For classic New Mexican, if they like a bit of a drive and what the whole shebang, send them just north of the Opera to Gabriels for tableside guacamole, many margarita options, and classic NM scenery. May even still be warm enough to sit on their patio.

Guess we like this topic, NIck!

D'accord, La Plazuela is quite good, guacamole made table-side in the evening, excellent pork carnitas tacos. Not overly spicy.

Nick, a year or two ago you asked the same question and I sent my list of restaurant recommendations. It still stands but malheureusement I deleted it. Perhaps your archives are more intact.

La Boca on Marcy Street for wonderful Spanish tapas, I advise getting there early, open Sunday.

Although I haven't been there in years, and I don't know why, Il Piatto on Marcy serves quite good Italian, not heavy like Osteria d'Assisi's, across the street from La Boca

El Meson on Washington also has excellent tapas but has gotten pretty expensive, closed Sunday and Monday.

Give Koi a pass.

Pranzo in the Sanbusco Center can be good Italian but is inconsistent, skip the lounge act upstairs.

The newish chef at Max's, Mark Connell, is just outstanding, closed Sunday.

Restaurant Martín is very good, open Sunday for lunch and dinner, closed Monday.

Andiamo on Garfield is reliably good, open 7 days.

Merle,

This being Santa Fe, there's about a 20% surcharge for the mere privilege of eating here.

Figure on a dinner for 1 costing anywhere between $25 - $50, depending on whether you have 1 glass of wine with the meal and of course what you order.

La Boca, Il Piatto, Pranzo and Andiamo would be at the lower end, La Plazuela and El Meson in the middle, and Max's, Restaurant Martín and Santacafé at the upper end.

Vinaigrette on Paseo de Peralta, if one likes great salads and soups, is great place for lunch or a light dinner.  Around $15-20/person. More California than Santa Fe.
