   It's not about particularly small houses, in fact it's quite the
opposite, but I recommend to anyone wanting to know about houses that
are designed for lack of AC and such creature comforts the book "The
Architecture of Country Houses" by Andrew Jackson Downing.

   Written before the advent of creature comforts, the book is the
culmination of collective wisdom about how to build a house that is
comfortable in all weather without modern technology and materials.  It
also gets into practical design for function.
