The new MSN Beta Search is a strong challenge for Google and Yahoo. Is it able to beat Google ? MSN Beta Search claims that their engine will search 5 Billion pages, Google talks of 8 Billion pages. Yet the exact result number is less important than speed and the ranking algorithm, which was part of the Google success. Actually, the ranking algorithm is behind the cluster administration and load balancing software the core technology of Google. (Google seems to run a big Linux Cluster with about 10,000-40,000 Servers, see http://blog.topix.net/archives/000016.html and http://www.tnl.net/blog/entry/How_many_Google_machines) The new MSN search is very fast - certainly Microsoft has the money the beat the Google cluster - and the "ranking" function for the results with the three equalizer sliders is interesting (see "Search Builder" -> "Results Ranking") http://beta.search.msn.com/ P.S. And it is able to find the FRIAM List :-) http://beta.search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=FRIAM |
I shudder to think of microsoft controlling internet searches. "Linux"

Yes, the thought that the Microsoft "Empire" could
control internet searches is in fact frightening (at least disturbing). Bill Gates once again extends his reach. And his developers have done a god job: the new MSN Beta Search is really fast. And it is only a "Beta" Version. I don't know why they have to develop their own engine at every price. It seems to be a good search engine, but why another search site ? Why don't they do something really useful or exciting with all their money ? There are already a number of good search engines besides Google, for example http://vivisimo.com/ http://www.kartoo.com/ http://www.altavista.com/ http://www.yahoo.com/ http://looksmart.com/ http://www.teoma.com/ http://a9.com/ http://www.wisenut.com/ http://www.alltheweb.com/ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Edward A. Why be scared? Everyone's favourite search engine is already making sure
that the citizens of China, France, Germany and - oh yes - the US don't get to see anything that would be too troubling See http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/11/07/1442217&tid=153&tid=226&tid= 217 - rh > -----Original Message----- > From: Jochen Fromm [mailto:[hidden email]] > Sent: Saturday, November 13, 2004 1:14 PM > To: The Friday Morning Applied Complexity Coffee Group > Subject: Re: [FRIAM] The new MSN Beta Search > > Yes, the thought that the Microsoft "Empire" could control > internet searches is in fact frightening (at least > disturbing).
