The Blog I just sent you

Nick Thompson

Sorry –

I thought I would get a chance to write an explanatory cover letter, but I was wrong.  This presents itself as a Sports Blog, but it is so much more.  Scan down for entries on improbable collisions, including, for example, the following.

Apparrently an asteroid is passing between earth and our communication satillites as we speak.  Duck!

Nick

NASA Was Terrified by the Asteroids -- Terrified the Agency Might be Assigned a Worthwhile Mission: During the offseason an asteroid crossed within 48,000 miles of Earth -- well inside the orbit of the moon, and only somewhat above the level of telecommunications satellites. Another asteroid exploded in Earth's upper atmosphere. In July, something enormous struck Jupiter, leaving a "scar" thousands of miles across in the dense Jovian atmosphere. Had the object, probably a mega-comet, instead struck here, you would not be reading this, as life on Earth would have ended last month.

As telescopes and astronomy improve, potentially hazardous space objects -- asteroids and comets -- are turning out to be far more common than previously believed and far more likely to hit the Earth than once assumed. Currently there are more than 6,200 known near-Earth objects of significant size, and nearly two-thirds were discovered in this decade. Details of the potentially deadly ones are here. As is shown here, astronomical discoveries that there are a much greater number of dangerous space rocks than once assumed, coupled to geological discoveries that wide-area destruction from space-object strikes has been much more recent than we'd like to think, argue for building a system to stop asteroids from hitting the Earth. But while NASA continues to plan to waste hundreds of billions of your tax dollars opening a Motel Six on the moon -- even Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin calls the moon base plan "a dead end" -- the space agency is doing nothing to protect the Earth from space objects.

Jupiter

NASA/JPL/Infrared Telescope FacilityThis impact mark on Jupiter is almost as large as Earth. If whatever hit there hit here, you wouldn't be reading this caption. But NASA still says all space money should be wasted!

Stopping an asteroid from hitting Earth appears technically feasible. Maybe an anti-asteroid system would never be used, but if one were, this would not only return tangible benefits to taxpayers -- it could be, oh, the single greatest achievement in human history. Yet NASA hasn't lifted a finger on an anti-space-object system. Space agency budget priorities continue to be focused exclusively on serving NASA internal constituencies that benefit from a Moon Motel Six -- aerospace contractors, congressional districts with manned-space flight centers -- and the taxpayer be damned. Though, NASA just established a Web site that lets you sign up for Twitter alerts on deadly objects approaching Earth. Maybe one will read, "Human life about to end. NASA got $1 trillion since founding yet did nothing. LOL!"

Ugh, this argument again. I have to admit, it would be neat to deflect an asteroid - but neater still to have a space colony, unlikely as that seems (unless we get terraforming down pat or just find a habitable planet/moon a convenient distance away, a poor bet).

Arlo,

Something about the asteroid passing between us and our communication satellites that caught my attention.   But did you also catch the series of observations on recent navy navigation errors.

By the way, do you remember the alleged conversation between the ENTERPRISE and …., well, you will see.  I have it filed away on my computer under REALISM VS IDEALISM

The following is an actual radio conversation released by the

Chief of Naval Operations, 10-10-95:

1:  Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a

collision.

2:  Recommend YOU divert YOUR course 15 degrees to South to avoid

a  collision.

1:  This is the Captain of a US Navy ship.  I say again, divert

YOUR course.

2:  No.  I say again - you divert YOUR course. >  >

1:  THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER ENTERPRISE.  WE ARE A LARGE

WARSHIP OF THE US NAVY.  DIVERT YOUR COURSE NOW!

2:  This is a lighthouse...Your call.

Except maintain the NASA Near Earth Object program at JPL?

I propose a tax on ESPN to pay for the project.

Maybe a Livestrong type campaign where fans can pay extra for Earth Shield branding on their jerseys or something.  Proceeds go to NASA, USAF, etc.

As for what we sort of know, survey-wise, start at: http://www.spaceweather.com/ and scroll to "Near Earth Asteroids" and follow links.

With a circular error probable radius of 50 meters, they could easily miss it!

In reply to this post by Marcus G. Daniels
The AGS seems to be a variant of the M777 program.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M777
Using GPS guided munitions the M777 claims a CEP of 5 metres at 25 km.

Another advantage is with rapid fire rates of around 6 shells per minute through automated loading systems (only the fuses are lowered by hand), you can vary the trajectory (say 50, then 40 then 30, then 20 degrees) of a burst to have all the shells arrive at the same place same time. I can't recall the technical term for this feature right now.

What is the Navy's tool of choice for a precise attack on a recalcitrant Canadian lighthouse from a few miles away?
Is it AGS?

With a circular error probable radius of 50 meters, they could easily miss it!

That could be one expensive lighthouse!

Doug, the larger truth is that blowing hard isn't necessarily the best strategy, even for the blowhard himself.

Ugh, this argument again. I have to admit, it would be neat to deflect an asteroid - but neater still to have a space colony, unlikely as that seems (unless we get terraforming down pat or just find a habitable planet/moon a convenient distance away, a poor bet).

Oh no, even stealth lighthouses must be afraid!  Consider the Oak Island
Lighthouse:

    http://southporttimes.com/featured/200405.html

"The present structure of the Oak Island lighthouse is made of
reinforced concrete and stands 169 feet tall with a diameter of 16 feet. "

5 meters -> 16.404 feet
