The Article 50 Brexit clause explained: the FT's annotated text | Brussels blog

Nick Thompson

In case you’re interested:

Here is an annotated text of the exit provision of the treaty of Lisbon.  It’s not too long and very lucid.

And here, for anybody who doesn’t have the patience, is the wrap-up paragraph:

The question of what a Leave vote means is becoming a central feature of the referendum campaign. Boris Johnson, the London Mayor, and Michael Howard, the former Conservative party leader, have both argued that a vote to leave may give Britain the leverage it needs to extract a better deal from the EU. There may be no need to invoke Article 50. A new EU membership deal could even be put to a second referendum. The hitch? Britain may not have a negotiating partner. MEPs and some EU states are agitating for a clean, quick divorce. And all EU leaders are insisting that Article 50 is invoked before serious talks can begin. As one senior officials said: "no negotiations without notification".
