Hey Doug et al.,
I heard about this on NPR and couldn't believe Sony would be so stupid myself. Glad to know the technical experts share my uneducated anthropological opinion. I'm never loading a CD onto my computer again. The good news is that the EFF is considering a class-action lawsuit,
and if you live in California or New York, you can go after them. Another option is, of course, to run an alternative OS to Windows.
Either way, I strongly urge people to boycott Sony and all Sony products. What's really interesting about all this is that there are now claims of trojan's based on the sony rootkit in the wild. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/11/10/sony_drm_trojan/ Thank you, Tim Densmore ------------------------------- "There's an awful lot of people in the world that sneer at Segways because other people are having fun. Well, then, as if I really needed another reason to be able to state that
the only OS's running on machines at my house are Linux, and the BSD-based OSX. But ok, I'll take another reason. That always slows me down in the morning, especially if it's a
landline. Sometimes I can use nail polish, other times I'm screwed. Who are these phone gremlins, and why do they torture us so? fair enough, in the case of OS X at least. but the story just gets
worse and worse; http://www.boingboing.net/2005/11/12/sonys_other_maliciou.html "To summarize, MediaMax software: * Is installed onto the computer without meaningful notification or consent, and remains installed even if the license agreement is declined; * Includes either no uninstall mechanism or an uninstaller that fails to completely remove the program like it claims; * Sends information to SunnComm about the user's activities contrary to SunnComm and Sony statements and without any option to disable the transmissions." (That's the OS X rootkit, the Windows one comes from a company called First4Internet.) On 11/11/05, Tim Densmore <tim at backspaces.net> wrote: > To be fair, you're correct.
