All,
The CUSF “Coffee House Seminars” will continue this fall with a discussion of the colossal new discoveries in molecular, developmental, and evolutionary biology of the last few decades.
The description of the seminar is as follows:
Advances in paleontology and molecular biology in the last 20 years have utterly transformed how we understand phylogeny and evolution. We will begin our exploration of these developments through two works by Sean B. Carroll, The Making of the Fittest, and Endless Forms Most Beautiful. The second half of the semester will be dedicated to exploring some of the key concepts and methods of EvoDevo in detail. Thursday afternoons, 3.30 til 5.00 pm at Down Town Subscription on Garcia Street.
The ground rules of the seminar are: (1) everybody reads, (2) nobody talks who hasn't, and (3) we spend at least half of each meeting getting the facts straight. Beyond that, the sky's the limit.
The prerequisites are some graduate training in a relevant field and/or permission of the instructor. I intend to sign up a few more local people, but I would also like to sign up “distant” members, who read along with us, and join in our discussions on the forum.
The seminar will be organized by means of a google group, [hidden email]. I regret to report that Google has essentially given up on supporting GoogleGroups and we are on our own. They don’t even sponsor a support forum anymore. There WILL be problems, but I don’t have a better idea. If any of you could dope slap a Google executive for me, I would be ever in your debt.
Because of the potential spam problem, the group must be private. If you want to have a look at the website (it’s pretty primitive right now) send me a message and I will make you a [temporary] member. If you later decide you don’t want to participate, I promise to remove your name so we won’t be pestering you.
All the best,
Nicholas S. Thompson
