Here's something in that article that, frankly, surprises
me a bit: "Santa Fe Complex scientists, artists and technology consultants have helped model escape routes for Santa Fe County residents in case of wildlife". I mean, I *know* you've got some fierce mountain lions around, and all, but really... [Presumably this will bounce when I send it to <[hidden email]>, so I'm relying on you, Owen, or you, Nick, to make sure the rest of the SFXers are kept up to date on their activities. Who knows, maybe Siegfried and Roy will contract for your services now?] > Wow, SFX is off to a fast start! > http://www.santafenewmexican.com/Local News/Santa-Fe-Complex-lands- > Defense-contract > > Congrats Steve & Fred! > > -- Owen > > > > ============================================================ > FRIAM Applied Complexity Group listserv > Meets Fridays 9a-11:30 at cafe at St. John's College > lectures, archives, unsubscribe, maps at http://www.friam.org ============================================================ FRIAM Applied Complexity Group listserv Meets Fridays 9a-11:30 at cafe at St. John's College lectures, archives, unsubscribe, maps at http://www.friam.org |

The article should have said wildfire: http://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http://www.redfish.com/wildfire/RedfishGroup_Thorp_ABMofWildfireEvacuations_v002.pdf
All of those Santa Fe howling coyotes are a bit of a hazard, though. --Doug

Thanks. That worked.
Congratulations to all those names I recognized! I can remember sitting through one of those presentations and leaping out of my seat--holy smoke! That's MY house going up in flames! By the way, are you the same Pamela McCorduck who wrote
"Machines Who Think" and persuaded John Horgan to become a science journalist? C'est moi.
John Horgan claims me? It's true. Now I've read the piece by John Horgan.
I may have been more enthusiastic about AI than was agreeable to John's taste (no "singularity point" in those days, something I myself have much skepticism about), but my prognostications about AI were a lot more sound than John's about "the end of science," written in 1996 or so.
