[ SPAM ] Panama!

Steve Smith
Tami -

I spoke too soon, as I have since read a bit more of Gary's blog entries and have to adjust my former statement:   I have a similar penchant for self-reliance and tinkering my way through problems perhaps, but probably not at all like him with his rants.   I don't completely disagree with questioning government, etc... I'm just not as single-minded!

I was hoping there would be more material on your blog describing what you all are up to down there... I'm reading between the lines but I'd like to know more!

I think I'm reading that your main goal is to establish a sustainable homestead there, away from the expected ravages of a collapsing first world economy/infrastructure and with the many advantages of a tropical climate in terms of energy and food scarcity?

Tami -

I just tripped over your profile and followed it to your blog... Your story sounds very interesting!

I happen to be in Portland OR right now, though my own "homestead" is in NM. I have an adult daughter here in Portland and another in Denver.

I'm at a crossroads in my life at the moment and one of the things I am seeking is a more grounded, meaningful life. While I *do* have land and some water rights in a rural environment, what don't feel like I have is true peers, and more to the point, an intimate partner who I can share this kind of life with.

My spiritual preferences align with yours, I recently started a (limited) meditation practice. I don't smoke (anything) and like my alcohol in social moderation.

I might be a bit like Gary, from what I read in the blog. I *hope* I fit your stated interest in vulnerable yet emotionally strong and not carrying too much past damage to be good relationship material. We are all, of course, works in progress!

I am not as healthy as I want to (or intend to) be, a few years of stress and neglect in my middle age after a lifetime of easy vitality and health caught up with me. I'm working at shifting that, but such things are harder to "undo" than to do in the first place!

I admit that Panama seems like a LOOONG way away right now, and maybe a bit on the warm side for my nordic bones, but I share your distrust or mal-ease about the US (and all?) government... I want to be a good citizen of the world, it just isn't that easy in our current climate!

Would love to hear back from you, I am definitely intrigued!

- Steve
