Frank,

For the hell of it (and because I didn't feel like doing the work I was
supposed to be doing), I spent the evening throwing some code together for
converting grayscale images into 3D landscapes. Here it is with your image
data pumped in:
http://www.redfish.com/research/landscapeViewer.htm

(if you don't have Shockwave already installed, it will take you through a
process of auto-installing)

If the shockwave install is a hassle, here's the same code as a
double-clickable windows app:
http://www.redfish.com/research/landscapeViewer.zip

Recognize This?

Friam mailing list
Stephen,

That's really neat.  When you drive past Valle Grande you can see a small
peak--actually a hill--just east of a much larger one.  You can see that
clearly in the rendering.  I don't know if the area I selected contains the
ignition point of the Cerro Grande fire but I wonder if it would be possible
to do a CA simulation of that on this terrain.  Detailed wind data would be
hard to find.

Recognize This - wind model?

Friam mailing list
Frank,

I think I read about someone somewhere (Wolfram?) using cellular =
automata to
model turbulent flow. A potential substitue for non-existent wind data? =
It
could be interesting to superimpose something like that on a CA =
simulation
of fire propagation (particular as they drive each other)
