The formation of a new industry -- such as the biotech sector -- crucially depends on the nature of the network linking the agents (scientists, investors, public officials, research institutions, etc.) whose actions and interactions create the new industry. This process is a spatial process and the interaction between networks and place is a crucial, if no much studied, factor in the formation of an industry. Three doctoral students (students of Woody Powell, Departments of Education and Sociology, Stanford University and External Faculty, Santa Fe Institute) will report on their research regarding the formation of the biotechnology sector. Please join us for a lively and informal discussion.

*************************
