Maybe we already qualify. For a while, about 3 to 7 years ago, we
seemed to be the place for tech call centers. Here in the ABQ area,
call centers have come and gone for Intuit, Gateway, and a few other
companies. We still have ClientLogic, Qwest, Bank of America, T-Mobile,
AOL, J. C. Penney, Citibank and Victoria's Secret but these are less IT
and more customer service type centers.
I talked to some of the folks setting these up, and they had several
reasons for choosing ABQ. Highly qualified (in some cases
over-qualified) labour is cheap here. There's a surplus of tech-savvy
folks who don't have degrees and can be hired cheaply. Spanish speaking
folks can be found at wages cheaper than California and are more
qualified in quantity than those available in Texas. Telephone costs
are low enough to support call centers.
Personally, I know a fair number of local computer geeks who seem to
have passed from one call center to another and don't mind the work
conditions.
