We participated as well, but do not yet have the critter.

BTW: I was thinking that the 632 Complex might conceive of a XO
project of some sort, possibly even using local school kids as well.

OK, two things re: the XO:

1 - How many of us have or will get an XO, probably via the Give1Get1
program?
I have one coming before Jan 15 according to a recent email from
them.  Claiborne has one.  Tom Johnson is getting one.  Ditto Carl
Tollander.  That's 4.  Could the rest of us getting one shout out too?

2 - What would be a good (educational?) project to do on one or more
of them?
The wiki: http://wiki.laptop.org/ has a pointer to the software:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Software_components
The good news is that there is an emulator for folks not having an XO:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Emulating_the_XO

I have mine.

I have not been able to connect to my home WiFi net because, according to
the OLPC website, the software does not yet allow connections to a WAP
router.  Can that be fixed?

Second, is there any Linux software that would turn the device into a touch
screen/handwriting recognition tablet?

Is that a WPA router?  If so there looks like there may be progress
on that front:

It's also relatively easy to build it from source but the documentation
on that process is sketchy.  But neither with the qmeu images or such a
build did I find a way to get TamTam sound to work.   I tried VirtualBox
and vmware for  the former, Fedora 8 / x86_64 for the latter.

Same day I got the thing I got a message from them apologizing that they
wouldn't be able to deliver til after Christmas.  While I appreciate
being in their thoughts, the ETA they think they have may or may not
correspond to the ETA you experience.

I received an OLPC a few days ago (Give1Get1).

some hardware information. I find the OLPC not so easy to use, but to
their credit, they put a "Pippy" program (snake) icon in there, which is
a nice little interface to Python, which hopefully will be incentive for
some recipients to learn to program with Python.

One can become ROOT with "su" in the Terminal

The TurtleArt activity (Logo) is also the kind of thing you wouldn't get
with a commercial package.
It's got dockable blocks for programming primitives, and the shapes only
fit together if the logic makes sense.  Fairly approachable..

The major contradiction I have to what he says is regarding battery time.
The claim is six to 24 hrs.  I'm lucky to get three hours.
