David,

[hidden email] works just fine or [hidden email]

I am really, REALLY  sorry but I don't think we should meet.  I just told my "pod" that I think that, with the rising cases in neighboring states, Santa Fe has started to get more dangerous again, and that we should we should be even more careful than we have been. (Rural Western Massachusetts got a lot of cases from "vacationing" New Yorkers in March.)   With talk of a vaccine by the beginning of next year, it just seems stupid to take any risks whatsoever.

It's not that long.  In the meantime, let's continue to interact electronically.  We could do our own zoom session.  You will point out how "notional" the hazard is, and I will have to admit that I actually have no first-hand experience with the disease, what-so-ever.  I don't even know anybody, personally, who has told me that they know anybody who has had the disease.  It is still, for me, a media event.  A cultural meme.  Pray God it remains that way.

So let's plan to meet "on the other side.".

You take care!

Re: Virus Cases

Jochen Fromm-5
I was asking me the same as Nick. We experience a global pandemic and I am living in a big city of 3.8 million inhabitants and I don't know anybody who really has it. I have asked our local newspaper salesman who meets a lot of people and he says he knows people who have it, but only have little or no symptoms. Our cleaning lady (which helps us cleaning our apartment) is from Chile, she said her whole family in Santiago has the virus because they all live together in very small rooms where the virus can easily spread. Both of her grandparents have died from it. In Berlin we have overall only 8000 infected people, which is low compared to the overall population. Luckily.

The biggest recent SARSCoV2 outbreak in Germany was at a meat factory: low 10°C temperatures increase droplet formation and water condensation, no distance between workers and poor working conditions all contributed to the outbreak

Re: Virus Cases

Marcus G. Daniels
In reply to this post by Frank Wimberly-2

I knew one person that died in a car accident.  I know one person who was shot but survived.  I know of people that have killed themselves, but not personally.   I know of one person in a nursing home that died from COVID-19.    It took many years for me to learn of the former cases, but less than a year to learn of the COVID-19 death.

But I know a number of people that have some combination of risk factors:  impaired endothelial function (e.g. hypertension), older than 56, who have lived with polluted air for many years, are packed tightly with neighbors in an apartment building, who are overweight, who don’t or can’t exercise, and who have cancer or diabetes.    Bring the virus to individuals with most of these factors, and they have a good chance of dying.

I wonder what the prospects are for Covid19 testing "entirely at home" in the near future? I'm thinking something like home pregnancy tests or glucose monitoring tests, where you don't have to send a sample away. Such a beast would be especially helpful in the third world, many parts of which don't have any kind of postal service.

Re: Virus Cases

Is there something I can do to help? I could try to get masks and send them to Santa Fe in a small parcel if you give me an address. In the beginning they were hard to get and sold out everywhere, but know it is a bit easier here. Or is it easier to buy them in Santa Fe now too? I am not rich (the cleaning lady was the idea of my wife because she works often 12 hours a day and I am too lazy to clean every week), but if I can help please let me know.

In America as a whole the situation looks really concerning. Chris Hayes argues on MSNBC that the government has failed and Donald Trump should resign as president

OHMIGOSH!  What a kind thought! No, I think we are ok in santa fe for masks, etc.  Others may contradict me.  We are surrounded by states where bad things are happening, and we are the sort of place where rich people flee when the place where they get rich gets dangerous. But so far, we lurch along at 2-3 cases a day in a county of 150,000.   Apparently there are 87 people in the county that are recovering (or dying) from the virus.  3 dead. 120 recovered.

Thanks, Jochen.   Given how we have abused the world in the last 4 years, it’s touching to think that ANYBODY in another country gives a damn what happens to us.

My question is about the knowledge, and state of the science/technology. That is to say, what is the state of knowledge in the medical science community to develop such tests? Would we be a month away? A year? More?

Don’t look to the US for any inspiration on testing.  There are still parts where getting a test is not easy.

In America as a whole the situation looks really concerning. Chris Hayes argues on MSNBC that the government has failed and Donald Trump should resign as president

Hi Nick, I agree about meeting. On my way here I travel diagonally across the entire Navajo Reservation. Hitchhiking is a necessity on the reservation. It was quite hard to balance humanity with personal safety. It has always been my practice to give rides to anyone I see on the reservation. Those soliciting rides were always masked and had hand sanitizer that they used before getting in, and chem-wipes for the seat and anything they might have touched while in the truck.

Still think about whether or not I was reckless or reasonable. Do know I felt better about myself and value system.

Thanks, Dave.

These ARE the times that try men’s souls.  Striking how careful THEY were.

Glad you are looking out for yourself.

I announced to the family – we have social distance Sunday dinner – that all I want for my birthday (Jan 29) is a vaccination.

I believe my brother has had it.

When he is well enough to move around and not infect anybody else he intends to go get tested for antibodies.  Maybe another week.

Said it was one of the three worst illnesses of his life so far, though it looks like mostly extreme fatigue and lassitude; not evident trouble breathing.  And he is 7 years younger than I am.

Interesting. I didn't see the show, but might watch it on their web site. Did they mention what proportion of white Americans know someone who has had Covid-19?

Re: Nick Thompson

Frank Wimberly-2
By the way, I just had a Zoom reunion with my fellow graduate students from Carnegie Mellon from the years 1967-1973 more or less.  I had forgotten that one of them had Covid-19.  Stu Card wrote a book with Allen Newell on human-computer interaction in which they develop a model of the human user.  Stu has recovered despite having an "underlying condition".
