My new book

Pamela McCorduck
Please let me indulge in a little self-promotion here and tell you that my new book, one part memoir, one part social history, one part group biography, is now available. It’s called THIS COULD BE IMPORTANT: MY LIFE AND TIMES WITH THE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENTSIA, and is published by Carnegie Mellon University ETC Press, available in book form or as an ebook through the site below or on Amazon:

The title, by the way, comes from the decades I spent pulling on the sleeves of public intellectuals and saying, Uh, artificial intelligence? This could be important. To derisive laughter, of course.

Pamela

Cool! To celebrate your new book I submit this image I rendered over the weekend. I trained a neural net on an image from the Book of Kells and then had it reconstruct a picture of some mushrooms in the Sangre De Christos:

Hi, Jon,

No image attached to my copy.

But, more important, what in the name of doo-wah-ditty is the Book of Kells?

Hmm. Attachments seem to be assassinated by the mail server.

Here is a dropbox link. I put the screen grab on my Dropbox.

Here you go, Nick. The Book of Kells was done by Irish monks before 1000 AD, and it is on display in the Trinity University library in Dublin. There is also an awesome ebook version of it, which I have on my iPad. What you see here is a screen shot from it. That’s St. Matthew, but I’m sure you recognized him.

Hahahaha...

Matthew adapted the book of Mark for Jews.  Luke, a Greek physician, did the same for Gentiles.

That is cool. How does that style transfer work? Do you train it on just one image?
