Greetings -- and best wishes for the New Year! As several of you are aware, this year in addition to the fourth annual Media Industries (MISP) conference, we're including a special one day summit to help develop strategies for extending New Mexico's success in film and digital media. A few of the FRIAM members I know are already invited, but I believe we could use a few more, especially those of you with a special interest in education and the media technologies we'll be using increasingly in the next 5-10 years. We also have a few sessions during Saturday's Media Industries Conference that I expect will be of interest, from basic digital media production, to panels on web and software trends, and sessions on visualization and immersive media. For more information, please visit our ARTS Lab page at: http://artslab.unm.edu/newsevents If you'd like to sign up for the conference, you can register at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=pQi_2ffY_2bfdJFPVJP_2bRAvBGA_3d_3d Meanwhile, please take a look at the info on Friday's summit I've provided below. If you're interested in signing up, let me know! Best wishes, Eric Renz-Whitmore The summit will be held on January 11th, 2008, 9:00am ? 5:00pm at the UNM main campus in Albuquerque. The day will begin with an Executive Summary of activities and trends across the range of media as well as updates on work being done in Education and other factors affecting growth. In the afternoon, participants will break into one of the three working groups (below) for facilitated sessions. Each invitee has already been assigned a topic, but you are welcome to contact our MISP Coordinator if you wish to sit in a group that better fits your needs and expertise. Afternoon Working Groups: EDUCATION & WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT Every company looking to move or grow in New Mexico is concerned about having a pool of qualified potential employees to draw from; and we want to prepare New Mexico?s youth for our increasingly media-rich environment and to take these highly skilled high wage jobs. This session continues the work that was begun at the Governor Higher Education Summit (?New Media, New Needs: Serving the Developing Film and Digital Arts Industry in New Mexico?), including filling areas of weakness in education for movies, games, animation and visual effects; building bridges with our primary and secondary schools; developing resources, infrastructure and more. BUILDING NEW MEXICO BASED PRODUCTION Continued growth of New Mexico?s media industries depends on a balance of visiting productions and an active local community that produces its own work. Local production builds infrastructure and an ongoing job base; when the property is created in state, the profits, jobs and related infrastructure stay in the state. This session will develop strategies for encouraging more local production in all media, and increasing New Mexico?s share of post-production work. NEW MEXICO MEDIA NEXT The world of media is experiencing more rapid change than ever before, with new formats and technologies transforming not only entertainment but the infrastructure that underlies business and every aspect of our lives. This session will match technology and market trends with identified strengths in New Mexico?s creative media ecosystem. Each session will include 30-50 representative leaders from industry, education, and organizations supporting media industry growth. At the conclusion of break out sessions at 4:30pm, summit participants will gather for a brief final session to hear summaries and recommendations from all groups as well as action items for going forward. -- For more information about ARTS Lab and Media Industries Events, visit: http://artslab.unm.edu/newsevents -- Eric Renz-Whitmore, Program Coordinator ARTS Lab & Arts Technology Center 505-277-2253 FAX 505-277-2319 http://artslab.unm.edu |
