Didn't work too well.
Actually, it would be most useful if I could upgrade one of my virtual
machines, so I cloned that, upgraded it, and then found the Mavericks
upgrade on the app store as suggested by someone here, but it got an
error saying the processor was not supported (which is a bit odd, as
the processor is a Core 2 which was listed on the supported
list). Maybe the virtual machine somehow interferes with the Mavericks
processor detection code.
I think I'll abandon it here. Probably, I would succeed in upgrading
the physical machine, but there's little benefit to me in doing that,
as I almost exclusively work in a virtual machine on different
hardware.
There may be a way of getting this to work with an upgraded
VirtualBox, but I feel a rabbit hole yawning...
