MacKay on information theoryWhile we're on inference, I haven't gotten
through this yet, but it appears germane,
http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/week200.htmlAll sorts of nifty stuff about modeling and categories and inference. The
general notion
of what modeling is and can be seems to be getting ever larger! I'm looking
for some simpler
books on topology sufficient to give some alternate views on some of the
terms (I have the Armstrong and Kelly
and Mendelson intro books, but feel a need for something more along the
lines of a hypothetical
"Cartoon Guide to Topology").

Just came across MacKay "Information Theory, Inference and Learning
Algorithms". Full of all sorts of good stuff. I was after a comprehensible
introduction to MCMC and this is where I found it.
Full text available online at

(
http://www.inference.phy.cam.ac.uk/mackay/itila/Potter.html). Proves
conclusively that only native Welsh and Latin speakers should buy the
latter.
