ML startups

Marcus G. Daniels

Is it just me or are machine learning startups now in a race to the bottom?

One I saw today on LinkedIn takes all of the digital footprint of an employee, which means all e-mail and all Slack messages as well as Github, Confluence, Trello, etc. and synthesizes it into a “skills picture”.

Because of course the managers haven’t a clue about the skills of the individual contributors.   Is this the world we want to live in?

There's an article in Science about training a deep learning model to replicate human non-utility-maximizing decision making behaviors.

Ah, just imagined the dark side.  They'll weaponize it for spam calls, one question and the model will tell them exactly what kind of sucker you are and what offer to make.

Don't answer the phone.
