Lunar Solar Power

Interesting idea, but lots of work on the moon!  Why not collect the
solar power in the Jornada del Muerto of New Mexico (1000 km^2 will
collect about  1.4TW peak, use some of it directly and use some of it
to electrolyze water and insert the H2 into the natural gas pipeline
grid)  One could probably attain 10% efficiency allowing for conversion
losses and nighttime, that is still 140GW, which is a lot of power
plants.

It is also interesting to note that the installed power base of
automobiles in the USA is a factor of TEN greater than that in power
plants.  (I heard this at the Power Engineering Society meeting in
Vancouver in 2001) Electric/hybrid vehicles could become a method of
storing energy and evening out power spikes if used both as sources and
sinks.
