I mentioned this web application at FRIAM a few weeks ago, and it
turns out that the Census bureau has the prototype running on much
better hardware.
http://lehdmap.dsd.census.gov/You select a region, by clicking on the map or supplying the name of a
state, county, or city, pick the matching region from those that match
the name, and then refine your selection by zooming and panning. Only
some states are available in the prototype.
Now, pop down the Create/Change Overlay menu and select Create Travel
Sheds. The only choices you need to make on the form are Commute Shed
vs Labor Shed, and how to select. Choose the freehand selection tool,
then draw an area on the map. The census units with centroids inside
your selection curve get highlighted. When the hour glasses stop
tumbling in the Display Options area, you can select Points, Thermals,
or Both to display the density of commuters to a specified work area,
or the density of workplaces for a specified home area.
