We're a non'profit, community organization providing ULTRA-broadband Internet connectivity to the US 285 corridor and the Hwy 14 area. We have a very quick, synchronous T-1 which is providing us with connections up to 11 Mbps. There are 20 members currently, and that number is growing as rapidly as we can get both users and access points installed. We currently have 3 access points, two in Eldorado, and one on a hill behind the old Country Store just north of the Chevron station. Several more are in development, including one on my house here on the ridge at Old Road Ranch, which will provide access to everyone on the east side of US285 (across from Eldorado), and out as far as Apache Canyon and Apache Ridge. We're exploring possible access points which will give us connectivity across I-25 and over the De Vargas Hills. One or two more hops to the north, and we're into Santa Fe. Access points not installed on someone's house (about a 15" antenna), are powered buy solar-recharged batteries, as is the one on the hill behind the Eldorado Chevron station. I don't have a yagi or dish yet installed (next weekend, hopefully), but even with a small Netgear USB adapter, I get 3-5 Mbps connections 3.1 miles (line-of-sight) from the access point. There is a fellow out in the San Marcos area on Hwy 14 who has reliable 9-10 Mbps connections 9 miles from the same Access Point I'm using. A yagi will provide 15-20 DB of gain, and a parabolic dish similar in size to the DirecTV/vDishNetwork parabolas (about $65 bucks) offer 30+ DB. If it's line-of-site you can hit it. We're charging ourselves a $60 installation fee which will be rebated to members after one year. Currently, the monthly fee is $60, but we are now breaking even on costs, so we intend to lower that to $30 monthly sometime over the Summer. The plan is to add a T-1 for every 40 members. We are also planning the addition of an SMTP server to avoid having to go outside for email purposes. Most ISPs will not allow you to "relay" mail through their SMTP servers if you're not logged in through their gateway. Currently, several of us are using FastMail in Australia ($14 per year), which provides the SMTP service, AND has no limit on the size of emails and/or their attachments ... useful in and of itself. Equipment cost is around $150, plus a $70 router if you want a signal all over your house. At FRIAM on Friday, Owen and I briefly discussed the idea of creating a similar community organization in Santa Fe. You will discover that compared with our bandwidth, DSL and cable modems are like writing with quill pens. Check out the website, and let's create another smart mob that will provide Santa Fe enough bandwidth to drive all of Qwest and Comcast through ... and for trivial cost. ------=_NextPart_001_0005_01C3125D.1A514CA0 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META http-equiv=3DContent-Type content=3D"text/html; = charset=3Diso-8859-1"> <META content=3D"MSHTML 6.00.2800.1106" name=3DGENERATOR></HEAD> <BODY> <DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2><A=20 href=3D"http://www.lcwireless.com/"><STRONG>http://www.lcwireless.com/</S= TRONG></A></FONT></DIV> <DIV> <DIV> <P><SPAN class=3D910311222-04052003><FONT face=3DArial = size=3D2><STRONG>Check out the=20 La Ca=F1ada Wireless Association</STRONG>.</FONT></SPAN></P> <P><SPAN class=3D910311222-04052003><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2>We're a = non'profit,=20 community organization providing ULTRA-broadband Internet connectivity = to the US=20 285 corridor and the Hwy 14 area.
