Jodie Foster remarks in NY Times Magazine: “I was also naturally able to compartmentalize, to make decisions about when to feel and when not to feel. Some people call that a damaged spirit. Like, I’m so compartmentalized that I can
decide when I give and when I hold back. But that was helpful in order to design performances; to be in the moment and outside the moment. It’s also a good skill for directing.” Marcus https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/02/01/magazine/jodie-foster-interview.html - .... . -..-. . -. -.. -..-. .. ... -..-. .... . .-. . Thanks, that interview is pretty great. She also mentions her work as "Nell",
where she digs deep into vulnerability, a place that Foster expresses little historical interest in wanting to go as an actress. Is it *empathy* that an actor experiences when they compartmentalize *into* such a character? What is it to empathize with a fictional character, a phantom? -- Sent from: http://friam.471366.n2.nabble.com/ - .... . -..-. . -. -.. -..-. .. ... -..-. .... . .-. . Jon,
In my (very brief) career as a method actor (yes, it's true!), I was taught that the way into another's emotions was through their actions and their circumstances. Pay attention to what your fellow actors are doing and the props you are handling. Get out of yourself. The idea is not to ermpathize with an emotion but to have it. I was under the impression that *to have it* is to empathize.

Jon, The problem with your nabble strategy is that I never know who you're
talking to. Assuming it is me, yes, there is a tremendous confusion about the word "empathy". But let me put it this way. You and I, in the midst of a walking the woods, have stopped to rest and talk and I notice suddenly your eyes fixate on a point behind me, and, as suddenly, you scream "BEAR!" and start running. And as suddenly, I find myself running, too. Now, I call that more than empathy. Whatever you care to call that, that is closer to what a method actor is trying to achieve.
