Intel Shows off New Locating Technology

Wi-Fi for location determination is not new, but Intel has its own twist on
the vision. By determining the distance a specialized packet travels to
reach a client, the system can track locations up to 70 meters from an
access point. Perhaps more importantly, for locating and repairing faulty
switches and the like, the accuracy is good enough to put the device inside
or outside of a wall. It may even be possible to use the technology to
prevent those outside a building from using its wireless signal. Also of
note, Intel plans to share the technology with the IEEE 802.11 group for
standardization, ideally meaning it could be built into many vendors' access
points and clients.
