This is an important article about Trump which is not unrelated to our discussions of free will, narcissism etc. in my opinion.

Try using an "incognito tab" in Chrome. The trick used to work for the NY Times too, but they prevent it now. For "The Atlantic" it still works. If you want to support journalism it makes of course sense to subscribe. On the other hand "The Atlantic" belongs to the widow of Steve Jobs who has like the ex-wife of Jeff Bezos certainly enough money for 10 lives. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -J. -------- Original message -------- From: Russ Abbott <[hidden email]> Date: 6/16/20 06:25 (GMT+01:00) To: The Friday Morning Applied Complexity Coffee Group <[hidden email]> Subject: Re: [FRIAM] Important Article The Atlantic says I've reached my limit of 3 free articles for the month. Here is an amateur summary: Anne Applebaum attempts to explain why Republican leaders have abandoned their longheld principles in favor of loyalty to Trump. She makes comparisons to Nazi collaborators in France, German Communists in East Germany who accepted Russian Communism and authoritarian behavior even when it was incompatible with their beliefs. Several motives are offered using Lindsey Graham, other Republican Senators, Mike Pompeo, William Barr and Mike Pence. The latter two are particularly interesting. She thinks they are determined to protect the US from abortion, same-sex marriage, and demographic changes as the end times approach. She gives examples of slippery slope phenomena such as accepting trivial lies like greater attendance at the Trump inauguration than at the Obama occasion. She details how acceptance of the lies has grown to the point where American democracy is at risk. One detail: a high level Republican said that Graham tells people that he talked to Trump in a way that made him think of a highschool nerd who got attention from the school's star quarterback. I am not doing the article justice, Russ. I hope you can find a way to read the entire piece. Frank --- Frank C. Thanks, Frank, And especially, thanks Jochen. The anonymous tab trick worked. (By the way, I subscribe to both the NYT and WP, and I support many other anti-Trump organizations. I can't support every good organization, though.) It's a great article. Anne Applebaum is quite insightful. Just found out that she's also on Twitter (@AnneApplebaum), where you can follow her for free. -- Russ Abbott Professor, Computer Science California State University, Los Angeles On Mon, Jun 15, 2020 at 9:48 PM Frank Wimberly <[hidden email]> wrote:

Thanks, Frank. For pointing us to this brilliant article by Anne Applebaum. I just read it and seem to have succeeded in posting it to by Facebook page where it should be readable. I am struck by her final paragraph I leave anyone who has the bad luck to be in public life at this moment with a final thought from Władysław Bartoszewski, who was a member of the wartime Polish underground, a prisoner of both the Nazis and the Stalinists, and then, finally, the foreign minister in two Polish democratic governments. Late in his life—he lived to be 93—he summed up the philosophy that had guided him through all of these tumultuous political changes. It was not idealism that drove him, or big ideas, he said. It was this: Warto być przyzwoitym—“Just try to be decent.” Whether you were decent—that’s what will be remembered. My art theme: Dynamic exposition of the tension between matrix order and luminous chaos. "Attempt what is not certain. Certainty may or may not come later. It may then be a valuable delusion."From "Notes to myself on beginning a painting" by Richard Diebenkorn.

I was about to say the same thing, but sarcastically. Good and evil is subjective. It’s an election, as you say.
